European experts research in Maternal Health care in Kisumu

The European Union experts  has partnered with Austria Development Corporation and the Family Health Organization has to improve maternal healthcare reach in Kisumu County. Low income of  Manyatta and Nyalenda areas in Kisumu County will more benefit from improved and accessible healthcare funded through Care Kenya the European Union that seeks to stem the County's high maternal deaths. 


With 295 out of 100,000 mothers dying from child birth, Kenya's maternal mortality remains unacceptably high and far above the World Health Organization (WHO) rating, and Kisumu County is ranked among the top ten counties with high maternal mortality ratio, thus contributing to the worse indicators nationally as compared to other counties of similar wealth according to a United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) 2014 report.] Over 10,000 patients have already benefited from the program in the period November 2014 to October 2015 according to Kisumu Integrated Family Health Project Activities Report 2015.

Out of these, 1,166 children less than 1 year. 

On top of this, the program enabled over 6000 people access family planning and sexual and reproductive health services, and over 9000 were screened for nutritional assessment. 

The grant by the European Union, with co-funding from Austria Development Corporation and Care, was meant to improve maternal and child health, sexual reproductive health, family planning and the nutritional status of communities living within Manyatta and Nyalenda in Kisumu County for a period of three years (November 2014 – October 2017). 


The report also recognizes the input of the County Health teams and project teams that has worked efficiently so far, with both parties following a joint work-plan and implementing it in synergy.
